Blue Mill Fabric Collection - Dayton Sky

A calm, refreshing lightness flows through Dayton Sky, where soft sky blues mingle with gentle creams and subtle gray accents. The repeating grid of geometric blocks feels crisp and orderly, while the circular motifs tucked inside each square add a quiet sense of motion. For best results, machine wash cold on a delicate cycle with mild detergent, tumble dry low and remove promptly; do not bleach. Pre-washing is recommended.

The Blue Mill collection, designed by Pat Sloan for Benartex, feels like a conversation between past and present—a thoughtfully reimagined tribute to the stories preserved within the Virginia Quilt Museum. Created in honor of the museum's 30th anniversary, this line draws its spirit from the Historic 1822 Silver Lake Mill in Dayton, Virginia, where generations of quilts and their makers are remembered. Among the museum's treasures, the Pine Burr quilt by Melinda Jane Still Flint (1833–1919) stood out for its remarkable use of color and its beautifully varied antique prints. Pat Sloan studied these motifs closely, bringing their essence forward in new, wearable shades of blue, wine, rose, beige, and cream. Across the collection, you'll find delicate shirting-style florals, starlit scatter prints, and softly turning millstone motifs—all modern interpretations of the textiles Melinda once stitched. Each print carries a hint of the quiet elegance and practicality that defined early American quiltmaking, offering quilters today the chance to sew with patterns rooted in genuine history.

The story woven into this collection deepens as we learn more about Melinda herself. Widowed young during the Civil War and left to raise three small children alone, she supported her family as a seamstress, piecing together beauty and necessity with the same determination many quiltmakers understand today. Her great-great granddaughter, Allene Blessing, provided invaluable documentation when donating the Pine Burr quilt to the museum, allowing Melinda's legacy to take on new life through Blue Mill. It's a collection that reminds us how quilts have always been more than fabric; they are the stories of the hands that made them, the homes they warmed, and the lives they touched.

Together, the museum, Pat Sloan, and Benartex have created something that stitches past craftsmanship directly into today's quilting community. Blue Mill's palette of layered blues and warm coordinating shades invites makers to explore both tradition and fresh expression, using these 100% cotton prints, measuring approximately 44" wide, to create quilts that feel heirloom-worthy from the very first cut. With every block pieced from these beautifully considered fabrics, quilters become part of the long and wonderful history of making—a history that continues because we choose to carry it forward.

The collection also features a free quilt pattern, Days of Yore, beautifully designed by Stephanie Sheridan. This timeless project showcases the Blue Mill prints in a striking blend of stars, motion, and classic patchwork, all coming together to create a finished quilt measuring 60" x 75".
